The wound in the world

Two winters past, the miners broke through.

They dug too deep, and something came up to meet them. The town calls it the Rot. It hollows whatever it touches: crops fail, people go quiet and then empty, and new pits keep opening in the earth as the land caves inward, eaten from below.

No one left alive knows what the Rot is or how far down it goes. They only know which way it came from. You go down to find the source, and everything that comes back up carries a little more of the Rot with it.

Those who die will rot. Those who rot will not die.
The skill tree in game: the Embrace corner of the Rot triangle, with the Retch skill selected.
Not magic. Something worse.

How will you meet the Rot?

You don’t choose whether to rot, you choose how to meet it. One axis, three tracks, every one a slow bargain with the thing that is unmaking the world.

Ward

Refuse it. Keep it out behind lead and stone, and pay for the weight you carry.

Harness

Turn it outward. Channel the Rot through devices instead of your own body.

Embrace

Take it in. Real power, at the cost of greater exposure, and what that makes of you.

Steel & loot

Fight slow. Loot deep.

Combat is weighted and committed. Every swing commits you, and standing in the wrong place gets you killed. The gear you drag back out of the dark is the only thing that carries you further into it.

Loot worth dying for

Every drop is a gamble with the dark.

The deeper you go, the better it drops: magic, rare, set, and unique, each rolled with properties you will chase for runs. And each is lost in full the moment you fall.

The pack

There’s never room for everything.

Weapons, potions, ladders, and loot all share one grid. Something always stays behind in the dark. What you carry up is only ever what you made room for.
